CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle and yet very effective way of providing treatment to the body.
CST was developed by osteopathic physician Dr. John E. Upledger working as a Professor of Biomechanics at Michigan State University.
It is a gentle, hands-on therapy that focuses on the craniosacral system—a network within the body that reflects the connection between physical structures, natural rhythms, and overall function. Practitioners use a very light touch, typically no more than the weight of a coin, to help release areas of tension or restriction within this system.
By easing these restrictions, CST supports the healthy functioning of the central nervous system, along with other systems such as the digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory and circulatory systems. It may also help address physical effects associated with conditions like post-traumatic stress, anxiety & depression.
CST works by supporting the body’s natural ability to heal and self-regulate. Because of this, it is increasingly used not only to address specific concerns but also as a preventative approach to maintaining overall wellbeing.
Being very gentle in its application cranial osteopathy is applicable to all age groups. This makes it an effective treatment for babies and toddlers.
CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle therapy but a thorough case history and examination helps to ensure that the patient is not in need of other medical attention.
Patients often feel very relaxed during tretament and might even fall asleep. In other cases the patient may feel minor tensions, or slight aching arising and fading away as well as emotions coming to the surface. In most cases though the patient feels different after getting up.
Here are some potential benefits of CranioSacral Therapy:
- Relieves musculoskeletal tension: Craniosacral Therapy can help release tension and tightness in the muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues of the head and neck. This can be particularly beneficial for conditions such as headaches, migraines, and jaw disorders.
- Improves circulation and fluid dynamics: By addressing restrictions and imbalances in the cranial and spinal structures, cranial osteopathy can help improve blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and cerebrospinal fluid circulation. This enhanced fluid dynamics can support overall tissue health and promote healing.
- Reduces stress and promotes relaxation: The gentle techniques used in cranial osteopathy can have a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to reduce stress and induce a state of deep relaxation. This can be especially helpful for individuals experiencing anxiety, insomnia, or chronic stress.
- Enhances overall body function: The cranial bones, spine, and other structures of the head and neck are intricately connected to the rest of the body. By addressing dysfunctions in these areas, cranial osteopathy can help optimise overall body function and support the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
- Supports the treatment of various conditions: Craniosacral Therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to migraines, chronic pain, sinus problems, TMJ disorders, infant colic, digestive issues, and postural imbalances. It can also complement other forms of medical or therapeutic treatments.
It’s important to note that individual responses to CranioSacral Therapy can vary. Some individuals may experience immediate relief and noticeable improvements, while others may require multiple sessions to achieve the desired results.
